Amazon orders Image Comics’ ‘Paper Girls’ TV series

Deadline is reporting Amazon has ordered a Paper Girls television series based on the graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang. The Image Comics series has won numerous awards including the 2016 Eisner Award for Best New Series and Best Penciller/Inker. Comics writer Christopher Cantwell took to Twitter to share the news as he’ll be co-writing (and is co-showrunner) with Christopher C. Rogers, and Stephany Folsom.

The show will be produced by Legendary Television in association with Plan B. Deadline also reported just about a year ago the show was picked up by Amazon, but now it’s officially a go. Considering the high production value of The Boys the show will likely be of top quality on the Amazon Prime streaming service.

Paper Girls can currently be read in trade paperback across 6 volumes and a deluxe edition of volume 1. So what’s it about? Here’s the official synopsis for volume 1:

In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Suburban drama and otherworldly mysteries collide in this critically acclaimed story about nostalgia, first jobs, and the last days of childhood.

Due to the pandemic, it’s unclear when this show will be able to start filming, but we’ll likely see it released in 2022.
