DC FanDome ’20: Neil Gaiman reveals ‘Sandman’ Netflix show set in 2020s

Neil Gaiman gives us a few tidbits on the upcoming Sandman Netflix TV show.

DC FanDome is underway today and we’ve learned new details about Wonder Woman 1984, new videogame Gotham Knights, and got an insight into the Sandman universe too. The Panel included Sandman audiobook director Dirk Maggs and The Dreaming: Waking Hours writer G. Willow Wilson, and of course Neil Gaiman himself.

To wrap up the panel, Gaiman said due to COVID-19 a giant pause button was pushed on the production for the Netflix Sandman show. It’s a bummer, but Gaiman said it has allowed the production to get the scripts as close to perfect. Gaiman said they’re starting to get production design information via email as well as started to look at casting.

The biggest detail came when he discussed timelines. Gaiman said the audiobook starts in 1988 and ends in the early 90s. The audiobooks match the period of the comics taking place. The point of the story starting in the Netflix show is now, though, and that will change the story. Gaiman said that the timeline shift will change everything from the gender of characters to story changes. The big question when they’ve approached scripting the Sandman Netflix show has been, “If we’re doing it now, what would Sandman be?”
