Seven Secrets is an explosive new creator-owned action series at BOOM! Studios. Lead by Tom Taylor and Daniele di Nicuolo, the series introduces a secret organization called the Order with rules that separate parents from their son. Their son is the main character and he’s recently lost his father in the first issue. The previous issue focused on Caspar learning his way to becoming a super-spy, but now it’s time for him to prove himself and take his father’s place.
This issue opens in an unexpected location of Buckingham Palace. The enemy of the Order drops off Sigurd’s body at the palace and soon the queen is rushing to contact the right people. It’s a good way to show how entrenched the Order is around the globe, while also seriously pissing off the readers who liked Sigurd and want revenge. There are seeds being planted here to create the showdown of the century.
As the story progresses, Taylor and di Nicuolo peel back the onion that is the Order via trials for Caspar. If you like montage training scenes, you’ll dig this issue. Caspar must go through a trial that tests him and there are fun surprises. Not only does it help inform us of who Caspar is, but it helps convey how important the secrets the Order keeps hidden. Di Nicuolo does well with this montage of tests, never letting us forget the humanity of these characters. You’ll feel for them as they go through each trial.

This is a great issue that builds on Caspar’s desire to know his parents and also be loved. Taylor and di Nicuolo are building on Caspar’s character well, always showing his gumption and true identity through his actions. It’s really conveyed that he’s a great hero and admirable person because we see it rather than being told. Even though his parents were not allowed to love him openly, you can see how nature finds a way and it’s cool to see him rise up. There’s a hero’s journey here not unlike Karate Kid and it’s exciting to see Caspar find his way with only a little direction. There are also touching moments of reflection and connection that you don’t see in everyday comics.
This issue shows how well all its parts are working together. From Caspar’s personal journey to prove himself, to his mother Eva hoping to be the mother he deserves but fighting it, to the Order being revealed each issue, every piece helps inform the others. We still don’t know what is in the briefcases, but that doesn’t matter so much as it’s worth the wait knowing all will be revealed in due time.
Seven Secrets #3 is a touching, exciting, and well made third issue. Though this book is light on answers, it continues to be one of the most interesting narratives because it juggles so many elements so well.
