‘The Mothman Legacy’ review: A deep look at an overlooked legend

Looking at a man and a monster.

The title of director Seth Breedlove’s and Small Town Monsters’ latest release will give a clue to audiences as to what to expect. The Mothman Legacy does not just visit the recent history of the oft overlooked cryptid. It looks back on its surprising deep history and how it has affected the people it has come in contact with. The question becomes does it do enough to attract all audiences?

Lacking the charisma of Bigfoot and the inherent cool factor of the chupacabra, the Mothman seems to be relegated to regional history. Breedlove’s documentary delves further into the past of the creature. Those who think the cryptid’s history only goes back a few decades before ending as suddenly as it began will be in for a surprise. The Mothman Legacy is filled with interviews from those who claim to have seen the creature.

Interviews are an essential part of these types of movies. They can also make or break the entire documentary. For the most part, the interviews here range from standard to interesting. The ones that do not work as well are based on personalities. Some of the witnesses describe their encounters very matter of factly. While it does not negatively impact The Mothman Legacy, it is almost humorous to see.

Of course, this is out of Breedlove’s control. Short of coaching the interviewees, there is nothing he can – or should – do. The production of The Mothman Legacy is entirely in the hands of him and his team, however. They give their documentary a very interesting feel. Many similar shows and movies are content to rely on shaky cam and simple interview sets. Breedlove gives the film an almost horror movie vibe. It is a refreshing touch.

The most important part of a documentary about cryptids is they have to be interesting. This is where Breedlove’s film stands out. If a person is a Mothman expert, there will be enough new information to keep them engaged. If they are going in completely new, The Mothman Legacy is a great entry point. It is accessible to all viewers, which is can be hard in this genre.

The Mothman Legacy will be available on digital streaming platforms October 20.
