‘From’ season 3 episode 6 review: Existential scares, a ventriloquist dummy, and a dramatic bombshell

Rescue doesn’t mean that From’s horrors aren’t far behind Tabitha.

Never let it be said that From doesn’t know how to throw a curveball at its audience with audacity and spooky charm. “Scar Tissue,” however, manages a twist that changes my perception of the show stemming all the way back to the first episode and who the main character is.

The mystery surrounding the town has always had a dreamlike logic. The voice of a dead child may come through a disconnected phone to warn of impending doom. Far from that phone, you may find a bottle tree that can teleport you to places unknown. The reveal at this episode’s end doesn’t explain these mysteries, but it does reveal one character’s power.

The reveal comes at the end of an elaborate plot that intersects with the most characters in the episode. The intrigue of From has always surfaced during the daytime when the monsters go away and our characters have the opportunity to piece together the mystery box they find themselves stranded in. The danger of being devoured may subside, but it is replaced by the risk of insanity from trying to solve this place. The distress of being trapped is palpable.

“Scar Tissue” is often left over from a traumatic past event, and these characters have plenty of those. The production value of the town and surrounding forest comes in handy selling these big profound revelations. The world that Tabitha briefly had a visit to does hold a key for answers, however. Fluke or not, Tabitha’s bottle tree is the best chance that anyone (excluding Dale) has of escaping, despite the fact that Jade may have ruined the tree’s magic by taking down said bottles.

The individuals surrounding Jade and Tabitha had plenty going on this episode as well. Fatima learned that the baby which she thought was causing her to go ham on anything rotting didn’t actually exist during an ultrasound. The attitude stricken Julie got high and just sort of wandered off, ruining Kenny’s day by reminding him his mom’s dead. Victor and Henry retrieve Jasper, the ventriloquist dummy that apparently holds answers.

The episode culminates with a real tease of answers about the show’s mysteries. A result of Tabitha and Jade teaming up to investigate her bottle tree is him showing her his drawings of things he’s seen, like the effigies found near the crops that have been feeding the town. Her reaction to the drawings reveals that she had childhood nightmares of not only the effigies but the rocks surrounding them, and of the town, decades before she even came to town. This reveal raises the questions of not only her connection to the town but what made her forget in the first place.

The struggles each character has been going through are given focus and pieced together in an episode that ends with twist that turns the plot developments on their heads.

Thrilling twist ending has my mind racing with possibilities.
Fatima is also thrown a curveball that has me questioning where her storyline will go.
The plot keeps adding more and more layers, leaving me wondering when it’ll topple.
Episode starts to focus on characters that were on the sidelines.
Convoluted pacing left me wondering when and where each scene starts.
