‘The Power of Movement’ review: Honest and inspiring look at living with cancer

Step in the name of love.

The Power of Movement is a documentary that sounds like it is going to be too sad or too ridiculous to watch. The film is about Dr. Niraj Mehta, a radiation oncologist and choreographer. He seeks to promote awareness and healing through movement. His work has helped patients through the physical and mental aftermath of treatment.

Those who immediately discount Director Aaron M. Abelto’s documentary are making a mistake. A person’s state of mind is a huge part of recovery. Dr. Niraj started Making Moves Universal in order to get his message to people across the world. He wanted to do something that would help his patients. But is what he doing working?

Unsurprisingly, Dr. Niraj is a big part of The Power of Movement. Abelto shows him at seminars and working with his patients. It shows of his charisma and passion, but it initially comes as a sales pitch. As things continue, it becomes clear Dr. Niraj truly cares about what he is doing. The Power of Movement is broken up into sections like ‘Practice’.

This is a great idea because it shows off how Making Moves Universal helps those who participate. It is not about curing its patients, but healing them. As Dr. Niraj states, it is about helping people “mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.” The Power of Movement is a fun documentary. It focuses on an aspect of living with cancer that is rarely talked about. Making Moves Universal helps people emotionally deal with a physically and mentally exhausting illness. It is an inspiring documentary that will make people smile – which is exactly the point.
