Marvel Comics and artist Pere Pérez unveil new spin on Spider-Woman costume

The Marvel Comics exclusive artist talks about his work on Jessica Drew’s new era.

Yesterday, Marvel Comics revealed Spider-Woman was going back to her classic costume and today they’re letting us peer behind the curtain to see how artist Pere Pérez is changing things. Marvel recently signed Pérez to an exclusive deal.

“I’m very happy about my exclusive with Marvel,” Pérez said in a press release sent to AIPT. “Since I began working here I’ve had nothing but fun, good working experiences, and the chance to work with some of my favorite characters. Working with this team of editors and creators working on Spider-Woman is probably the best working experience in my career. The editors are not only giving us a huge amount of creative freedom, but also encouraging us to push things further. I can’t say anything but good things about the immensely talented Karla Pacheco and Frankie D’Armata. I’ll just say I am very lucky to be a part of this team.”

Pérez went on to detail a few of the new touches to the costume. “Aside from what you can see as the costume redesign, we have also included several surprise functional modifications that will also help to give a new fresh twist to Jessica Drew’s heroic abilities. Hopefully we are keeping the classic spirit of the character and also making the readers enjoy her adventures in a way they haven’t  before.”

New York, NY— January 14, 2021 — Yesterday, Marvel Comics announced the return of one of the most beloved costumes in comics: Marie Severin’s original design for Spider-Woman from her first appearance in 1977’s Marvel Spotlight #32. Over the years, Spider-Woman’s iconic digs have been reimagined, and now current SPIDER-WOMAN artist Pere Pérez presents his own unique take on this timeless design. Seen on his new variant cover for SPIDER-WOMAN’s #11, Jessica Drew has never looked better. Incorporating a modern twist on the classic suit, Pérez’s design is a perfect look for the hero’s redefining new era.

Praised for delivering both the action-packed fight sequences and the chaotic family drama that Jessica Drew fans crave, Pérez recently signed on as an exclusive artist with Marvel Comics. Here’s what he had to say about working with Karla Pacheco and bringing Spider-Woman’s current adventures to life:

“I’m very happy about my exclusive with Marvel. Since I began working here I’ve had nothing but fun, good working experiences, and the chance to work with some of my favorite characters. Working with this team of editors and creators working on Spider-Woman is probably the best working experience in my career. I can’t say anything but good things about the immensely talented Karla Pacheco and Frankie D’Armata. I’ll just say I am very lucky to be a part of this team.

“One thing I’ve been wanting to do for some time now has been adding my personal touch to a Marvel character, which I’ve been able to do now with this classic Spider-Woman costume update. It feels great to be a part of the legacy of creators who help shape the characters all of us love and enjoy.
