[Sundance ’21] ‘The Touch of the Master’s Hand’ review: Addicted to lust

A higher calling.

The Touch of the Master’s Hand is a short premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. The film deals with a theme visited often in stories. Focusing on the intersection between religion and sexuality, the plot is about a Mormon missionary who attempts to confront his pornography addiction.

The premise sounds like it will be either overly dramatic or completely played for laughs. While there are certainly touches of humor, the issue is treated seriously. The Touch of the Master’s Hand is as advertised. Someone is devoted to their faith – to the point where questions are dismissed without any thought – and is truly seeking help. It is an engaging short that keeps audiences interested in the main character.

The Touch of the Master’s Hand is well shot. The final scenes in the film are particularly well done. The main part of the short is a conversation between the missionary and the person he goes to for guidance. The camera cuts between both people and heightens the emotion of the scene.
