Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 04/26/2021

Travel to a dystopian America, a fantasy feudal Japan, and through time with this week’s Channel Surfing TV picks.

The Channel Surfing TV picks this week include a dystopian tale, a brand-new anime, and some superhero action. Continue the story of The Handmaid’s Tale with the release of the fourth season. Find out what happens to the first black samurai after he becomes a ronin in Yasuke. Then watch the team fight off an extraterrestrial threat in the season six premiere of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Seeking Justice

The Handmaid’s Tale is set to return this week with an all-new season. The critically acclaimed dystopian series based off of the work of Canadian writer, Margaret Atwood, sees the world at a tipping point and its fate may rest in June’s hands.

From the trailer, we see she’s on the run with various groups interested in catching her. June is alone since she’s burned too many bridges and her actions have hurt too many people. The odds don’t deter her from seeking her revenge and taking down Gilead.

Stream season four of The Handmaid’s Tale this Wednesday, April 28, on Hulu.

Based Off a True Story

In the late 16th century, an African man accompanied Italian Jesuit missionaries on a visit to Japan. Upon his arrival, a daimyo named Oda Nobunaga took interest in the gentleman and not too long after, the man was a retainer for the powerful and influential lord.

The new anime series, Yasuke, draws inspiration from this true story. It takes place in an alternate reality highly influenced by fantasy with magic and the supernatural. The legendary “Black Samurai” is pulled into a power struggle between feudal leaders when he encounters a young girl with mysterious abilities. Oscar nominated actor, LaKeith Stanfield, voices the lead character.

Yasuke will be released on Thursday, April 29, on Netflix.

ALIENS

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has kept things fresh throughout its tenure by revamping the roster of the superhero team-based series here and there and by traveling through time. While on their journeys, the Legends have encountered different threats including monsters and demons from hell. In the upcoming season, they have a new out of this world foe to face.

When we last left the show, Sara is captured by a strange beam after the team comes to the rescue once again. As you can guess, they will have to battle space aliens to not only free their colleague but to save the world for a sixth straight time. However, they don’t have the firepower to do it on their own and must recruit another Legend; a Texas gunslinger who has their own history with aliens and possesses talents that could be helpful in dispatching the intergalactic threat.

The sixth season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premieres Sunday, May 2, on The CW.
