Comics dominate our Channel Surfing TV picks this week with a pair of shows from the Big Two and special featuring a classic publisher. Superman & Lois returns to its first season following a hiatus. Then M.O.D.O.K. gets top billing with his own animated comedy. Finally, the Riverdale gang head out to Adult Swim for “The Bleepin’ Robot Chicken Archie Comics Special.”
Back to Smallville
Superman & Lois premiered earlier this year. The series brought the Man of Steel full time into the Arrowverse and features Clark returning home to Smallville with his wife and two kids rather than sell his childhood home. The entire family use the opportunity for a fresh start at life but they can’t keep themselves out of trouble. Lois comes into conflict with businessman, Morgan Edge, who has taken interest in their new hometown. a mysterious stranger is out to discredit Superman, and one of the sons begins developing powers.
The show is set to return this week following a hiatus. When we last left off, we learned a little bit of Captain Luthor’s backstory and his hostility towards Superman while Jordan is accosted by a classmate who now has superpowers. Hopefully we’ll find out what happens next with the Kent family.
New episodes of Superman & Lois begin Tuesday, May 18, on The CW.
Take A.I.M. for Workplace and Family Fun
It can be difficult finding that life/work balance to the degree where success in one isn’t at the expense of the other. If a family comes into the picture, it can only become more complicated dividing time between the two. Now imagine your job is the head of a technological weaponry company with sights on taking over the world.
That’s the same position that M.O.D.O.K. is in but it seems he can’t do either properly. In the new animated comedy featuring the distinguishable Marvel villain with an abnormally large head, exoskeleton, and hoverchair, the titular character manages losing a controlling stake in A.I.M. and repairing his deteriorating relationship with his wife and two kids. But with creators Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt and animation from Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, it’s funny.
Stream the first season of M.O.D.O.K. beginning Friday, May 21, on Hulu
Riverdale Comes to Robot Chicken
Speaking of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, probably their most popular creation is Robot Chicken. The long running stop motion animated sketch show has been on for ten seasons and will air an eleventh some time later this year. In that time, several specials have been made in conjunction with some pop culture heavyweights such as Star Wars, DC Comics, and The Walking Dead.
The next special sees the series parodying the Archie Comics gang. Expect a number of funny skits including Archie facing the action-packed return of Josie and the Pussycats from outer space and his own origin story done Robot Chicken style. There’s even a Josie and the Pussycats film reunion between star, Rachel Leigh Cook, and Josie’s onscreen boy band DuJour comprised of Seth Green, Breckin Myer, and Donald Faison. They all lend their voices to the special.
“The Bleepin’ Robot Chicken Archie Comics Special” airs Sunday night, May 23, on Adult Swim.
