Is It Good? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time #2 Review

After last month’s excellent and hilarious opening issue, the next chapter of Turtles in Time gets pretty dark. Is it good?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time #2 (IDW Publishing)

The Turtles arrive in feudal Japan, where they are met with more incomprehensible B.S. from Renet before she vanishes. After that, things really get rolling.

No one likes you, Renet.

As you might have guessed, the location of this story leads our heroes to encounters with their former/human selves, their parents, and even Shredder.

…and yes, paradoxes and closed loop/fixed timeline time travel are thoroughly explored.

Is It Good?

That’s all I really want to say about the issue’s plot. Otherwise, there would be quite a lot of unraveling and spoiling to do of writer Erik Burnham’s excellent story. Not only does he deftly navigate the usual tropes of time travel tales, but the narrative has a huge emotional impact, as well.

My only minor quibbles were that we STILL don’t understand how the Turtles are traveling through time (or Renet) and Leonardo acted a bit out of character. But beyond that, this issue turned what could have been a contrived and overly complex story into a tight, well told tale.

The artwork by Charles Paul Wilson III is also very good, giving everything a classic feel and providing the action sequences with plenty of kinetic weight.
It all adds up to another strong chapter in this miniseries that has me all types of pumped to see what they’ll do next.
