[Tribeca ’21] ‘Cherry Lemonade’ review: Just another day

Cherry Lemonade is a short that is part of the Juneteenth programming at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The story focuses on a Black girl (Eris Baker) who really wants a cherry lemonade Slurpee. Once she has the money, she takes it upon herself to get the frozen drink and learns something about her brother that may change her opinion of him.

The script does an excellent job of showing off the unique relationship shared between siblings. It is obvious the young girl and her older brother have a strong bond. Writer and director Aisha Ford makes great use of time. The scenes between the two are powerful and filled with meaning. There is no wasted motion in these moments.

This makes the twist later in the story that much more poignant. The two feel a number of emotions during the climax. The reactions and performances are top notch. It is a great scene that showcases the importance of familial love while spotlighting the environments people grow up in. This is punctuated in its heartwarming ending.

The Tribeca Film Festival takes place from June 9 – June 20
