Captain America Annual #1 gives a lot away on its cover, which depicts Overtime from the Infinity Wars event in 2018. If you haven’t read that story or forget most of it, now’s the time to catch up because this whole comic is all about it.
Widow and Cap have fun banter, but the book feels less like a Cap book overall and more like an Avengers story. And quite frankly, an Avengers story that should have been told earlier considering the event in question happened in 2018. To go this route with the Annual is a bit odd, but Steve has some standout moments in the title.
The real star of the show is Jed MacKay and Juan Ferreyra’s backup story in the issue. The art is incredibly unique and there are some beautiful panel layouts, including one that’s shaped like a star. The coloring features red, white, and blue overtones in a really clever way — it makes the art really stand out.
MacKay has a good grasp on Steve’s voice, even if the story is still more of an Avengers one than anything significantly “Captain America.”
If this story gets picked up later, it’ll make more sense in an Avengers book, but it’s a comic that is entertaining if nothing else.
