‘Too Late’ review: Uneven comedy horror is all over the place

Joke’s on you.

Too Late has one of the most appropriate taglines for a film in recent years. It goes without saying that comedy is a matter of taste. The best example here? A character who must eat comedians to stay alive is named Bob Devore (Ron Lynch). The jokes write themselves, but are they funny? Violet Fields (Alyssa Limperis) works as the assistant to late night variety show host Devore. She soon meets an aspiring comedian named Jimmy Rhodes (Will Weldon). This causes Devore to question her loyalty and place Jimmy’s life at risk.

Horror comedy is at its best when it is silly and a little crude. The problem with Too Late is oftentimes, it is too funny. It sounds like a strange problem to have, but it is a noticeable one. It is never silly enough and goes for genuine laughs. Essentially, the film comes off as having an unintentional tonal issue instead of the purposeful belly laughs it is going for.

The scares do not deliver the impact they should.

On the horror side, Too Late provides a few good scares, but none deliver the impact they should. There is nothing wrong with them; there are some that are even impressive. Again, this is due to how difficult it is to get a feeling for the film. The performances help a little. The comedians are fun and there are some strong jokes to be found. Too Late also does a great job of weaving its message of gender imbalance into its narrative. The film is far from being bad. The issue is it does so many things okay, but it is unable to do anything well.
