Out this week is the graphic novel of The Boy Who Conquered A Mountain from Heavy Metal Entertainment. Printed under their Virus imprint, and available online at the Heavy Metal website, the graphic novel is by Jonathan Chance and Emilio Utrera and is an adventure story set in 1600s Japan.
“This is a classic adventure story set in 1600s, Japan—a great time of magic and fantasy. It’s also a tale of true courage,” Chance said in a statement sent to AIPT. “We all have it within us to be something great. To become ‘someone’ great. Perhaps even greater than we imagined.” Starring a young man named Kaleb, Chance said it’s a story filled with grief with a protagonist who lacks confidence. “But therein upon this challenge lies his transformation.”
“Artist Emi Utrera and I put a lot of love into it so we can’t wait to see what people think of it,” Chance added, “This book is dedicated to my son and the allegorical mountain he may have to climb. A mountain we all have to climb at one point. Mine was a few years ago in a personal tragedy…this story is also my story.”
“In The Boy Who Conquered a Mountain, you will find adventure, action, martial arts, and a strong team spirit, Utrera said. “In the words of the great writer Héctor Germán Oesterheld, he said this about ‘the collective hero’: ‘the only valid hero is the hero in a group, never the individual hero, the hero alone.'”

Kaleb, a young boy, dreams of death and destruction to find a day later his home, the village of Little Rock, devastated, destroyed by fire. He sets upon a journey to discover what happened.
