Daredevil‘s “Lockdown” is sharpening its story very early in this second installment, and we can feel its cut right away. Chip Zdarsky has unleashed Bullseye on Hell’s Kitchen and tasked him with getting the ultimate kill count of everyone. That almost takes me back to Maximum Carnage from my childhood with the serial killer and summertime; within a couple of pages, Zdarsky and Mike Hawthorne manage to recreate that vibe.
Looking at the characters from this issue, Zdarsky left no one behind as we get a tour of the supporting cast to see what is going on and advance their storylines. I know I’ve said it before, but I appreciate all the “spinning plates” Zdarsky takes on with this volume. He has so much going on that I think this book could justify a spinoff focusing on the good guys or the bad guys. I wouldn’t complain about more Daredevil in my life!
It was great to see Alice return and see the fence-mending between herself and Elektra. I appreciate that they both have an end goal for dealing with loss but look to get there with different philosophies. Butch gets the big moment in this issue as he takes on and takes down Hammerhead. This move lifts Butch to a higher class of fighter in my eyes as Butch does it with no weapons and leaves a very lasting mark on Hammerhead. I wonder just how much more punishment Zdarsky has for Hammerhead, as he has been the punching bag for quite a while.
We see that Matt has stumbled onto “re-cid” from Warden Hollis’ prison for our main course of characters. I enjoy this reckless version of Matt while being locked up. There was one panel where I found myself wondering if Matt is trying to die — finding a way to go out swinging without committing suicide, which goes in hand with the reckless attitude we’re seeing. I would have loved more insight to “re-cid,” but I’m sure we will see it play out in future issues.
Wilson and Mary get a romantic moment, progressing the new relationship they have. I am super appreciative of the voice that Zdarsky has given Mary since he has started writing her — she feels like she can stand on her own and is a character to watch. Now the big moment happens pretty early in this new arc. In last issue’s review, I said according to the trade paperback solicit, this should be an end of arc issue, but it looks like that has changed, so now we could see this arc play out to issue #36. There is a massive twist with this showdown between Elektra and Bullseye, and I’m hyped to see it play out!
Daredevil #32 is a great issue that advances the main players’ adventures while amping the drama and action up. That last page twist will both excite and scare you with it’s potential. If these last two parts have been an indicator, then this arc is going to explode!
