‘Fully Realized Humans’ review: Pregnancy comedy with a personal touch

Can you become a better parent in one month?

Fully Realized Humans takes on a concept anyone can relate to. Jackie (Jess Weixler) and Elliot (Joshua Leonard) have come to the conclusion they have fears to confront and shortcomings to address. The two have decided they want to be better people. This is especially important since they are expecting a baby. But is less than one month enough time to become the perfect parents?

The movie captures the personal aspect of becoming a parent that many comedies tend to miss. Many scripts are so focused on getting the laughs, they tend to only address the emotional impact of becoming a parent in the most grandiose of ways. Fully Realized Humans also visits the fear of having to take care of another human, but it adds a depth of personality that goes beyond making people laugh.

This does not mean it does not know how to deliver the laughs. An early conversation about vaginal ripping is as funny as it is disgusting. Fully Realized Humans just makes sure to include the intimacy that comes with a life changing event. Many films dealing with pregnancy are funny; few are as genuine. (The fact that Weixler was actually pregnant during filming may add to the authenticity.)

An argument can even be made that Fully Realized Humans may get a little too personal. Things get pretty talk heavy in the film’s final moments. It never loses the charm and closeness it has worked so hard to build, but it will also catch some audience members off guard. But that may be the point. It may be a little much for some, but it fits in with the rest of the movie perfectly.

Fully Realized Humans opens July 30
