If you’ve been reading Vita Ayala’s New Mutants, you know that clones get special treatment as far as the resurrection protocols. Namely, they aren’t allowed to be reborn. The problem is when a beloved and unique character like Gabby Kinney–the clone of Laura Kinney–was murdered many wanted to reevaluate the rules against resurrecting clones. In New Mutants #21, a firm stance is taken though without leadership consent.
In a bit of foreshadowing in the issue, Ayala uses a data page to confirm how The Five feel about not resurrecting clones.
Then later, we learn The Five, along with Jean Grey resurrect Scout. After coming to her senses–this was her first time ever dying after all–she realizes what they’ve done.
Luckily The Five, along with Jean Grey make it quite clear they know what they did and are ready for any repercussions.
As Proteus puts any repercussions, they’ll “Deal with it.” While The Five have made a clear statement by bringing by Scout it’s quite clear there is going to be so annoyed figures on the Quiet Council with Xavier likely being one of them. If you bring back clones or “copies” what’s to stop other mutants from wanting multiples of themselves?
All of this brings into question what it means to be a person or a soul, and how the ability to resurrect oneself creates an ambiguity around morality and life that hasn’t been tackled by the leaders of Krakoa. It’s problematic, and for the Quiet Council to not even debate it shows Krakoa is less of a democracy.
