‘Apartment 413’ review: Terror and the rigors of job hunting

Pics or it didn’t happen.

Paranoia multiplied by stress and insecurity can drive a fast paced and tension filled tone in a story. Apartment 413 takes its time crafting the story and building characters before diving into the madness. Strong character development and performances fuel Matt Patterson’s psychological thriller Apartment 413.

Marco is a man in search of a job. He is supported by his pregnant live-in girlfriend, Dana, who is happy to help him as long as he is willing to help himself. The easy going nature of their relationship is established from the start as well as their mutual respect and love for each other. Marco begins to receive menacing and alarming notes and text messages from an anonymous source that begin to hamper his job search and cause stress in his relationship. Marco’s confusion over the messages turns to outright fear as he tries to make sense of reality and the home he lives in.

The film is set entirely inside of Marco and Dana’s apartment. Patterson’s directing maximizes the given space while building on Marco’s mental state. There is an attention to detail and sound that add to the ambience and builds the tone throughout the film.

Nicholas Saenz and Brea Grant play Marco and Dana. They share a great chemistry on screen.  Grant is no stranger to the thriller genre . She is a creator and compelling actor in films like The Stylist and Lucky. Saenz’s performance is particularly powerful in his role of Marco. Marco is a complicated character who is truly nice, but is at odds with him circumstances.

Apartment 413 touches on many issues of mental health, self preservation, and the sanctuary of home. Apartment 413 is a slow burn that is impactful and will resonate with anyone who has ever felt out of place. Apartment 413 will be available for digital on demand on September 17th.
