Channel Surfing: Awesome TV picks for the week of 09/13/2021

A comic adaptation, a docuseries, and an adult animated show.

We have a varied selection for our Channel Surfing TV picks this week. Witness a world when the overwhelming majority of human males on the planet are wiped out in Y: The Last Man. Explore the unsavory aspects of professional wrestling in Dark Side of the Ring. Then, a woman comes back from the grave and receives a second chance to be a good mother in Teenage Euthanasia.

Alas, Poor Yorick

Brian K. Vaughan has been successful in bringing several comics he’s worked on from the page onto the small screen. Runaways aired on Hulu while Paper Girls is in development for Amazon Prime Video. Today, Y: The Last Man, the Vertigo series co-created by Pia Guerra, is set to premiere.

In this world, a catastrophic event occurs resulting in almost every mammal with the Y chromosome dying. The only known survivors that carry the chromosome are a young man named Yorick Brown and his helper monkey, Ampersand. Yorick (Y), navigates this new normal where he can be considered a savior or a threat.

Watch the first three episodes of Y: The Last Man starting today on FX on Hulu.

It Ain’t All Fake

The docuseries, Dark Side of the Ring, is one of Vice TV’s most watched shows. As the title implies, it takes you behind the scenes of pro wrestling and highlights the less glamorous and controversial facets of the industry. The third season began last May and it will be returning this week to finish off the last half.

The upcoming episodes cover several fascinating topics. There will be spotlights on specific wrestlers including Chris Kanyon, Johnny K9, and Luna Vachon along with dives into WWE’s “Plane Ride from Hell” and their steroid trials.

Dark Side of the Ring 3B begins Thursday, September 16, on Vice TV.

Mommy Issues

Adult Swim is one of the best places for quality adult animated series. The late-night programming block is already home to such favorites as Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken, and Tuca & Bertie. They might have their next hit on their hands with Teenage Euthanasia.

Trophy Fantasy is a hot mess and a terrible mother. Her crash and burn lifestyle led to an early demise and as her body was being prepared, the combination of embalming fluid and a single tear from her daughter brought her back to life with special powers. Now she has a second chance to make things right but sometimes bad habits are hard to break even after death.  Maria Bamford, Jo Firestone, Tim Robinson, and Bebe Neuwirth all lend their voices to the project.

The season premiere of Teenage Euthanasia is Sunday, June 19, at midnight on Adult Swim.
