Fantastic Fest is back and even though things are a little different this year, the lineup is as impressive as ever. Found footage, socially aware horror, and good old fashioned slashers are just a sample of what is being shown. AIPT will be returning to Austin and our heads are spinning trying to figure out what we want to see. Here are just a few of the films that caught are attention.

Gigi Saul Guerrero is one of the best horror directors today. She has an obvious love for the genre and instills her movie with sharp commentary and a grindhouse aesthetic. Her latest movie tackles gentrification and its effects on the future. If her past work is any indication, Guerrero’s newest film promises to be gory and thought provoking.
Lamb

The most interesting movies are the ones that grab your attention and leave you unable to explain why. Lamb is about a couple who have recently experienced a loss and are caring for their flock of sheep. When one of their sheep gives birth to a peculiar lamb, their lives are changed. The setting looks gorgeous and Noomi Rapace is a great actress. The film is surrounded by an air of mystery that is impossible to ignore.
Slumber Party Massacre

Horror movie remakes are a mixed bunch. They are usually done to bring life to a stale franchise that has been watered down by too many sequels. Slumber Party Massacre is only composed of three films (though it is a part of the larger Massacre series) and never reached the fame of other slashers of the 1980s. The original certainly stood out from others; its movie saw its female cast band together to defeat the killer instead of helplessly get killed off by him. The remake promises to build on the legacy of the source material.

Netflix and Chills has some of the most exciting films coming this Halloween season. Based on the book of the same name, the story is about a girl who has started at a new high school for her senior year. Unfortunately, a serial killer is going around killing her new classmates with dark secrets. Can she find out who is murdering everyone before her own secret gets out?
V/H/S/94

I am resigned to the fact that I will always love found footage. They may not always be winners, but I cannot stop watching them. The same can be said of the V/H/S/ franchise. Not all of the stories work, but there is no way I am going to stop watching now. The latest entry takes audiences back to 1994. It will be interesting to see what new tricks the series employs.
Fantastic Fest takes place from September 23 – September 30
