Is It Good? Amazing Spider-Man #6 Review

Spider-Man has a new romantic interest of sorts, in a girl calling herself Silk. She was held captive for years by Ezekiel because unbeknownst to all she was also bit by the radioactive spider. Now released, she and Peter have a feral attraction to each other, but is it love or lust and is it good?

Black Cat is pissed with Spider-Man because a few months ago Superior Spider-Man, controlled by Doc Ock, threw her in jail. Now she’s teamed up with Electro to punish the bug. Last issue Spider-Man was on Fact News to talk about his company, but Black Cat stormed in and was ready to rip off his mask and show the world the secret identity of Spider-Man. Rut roh!

Can nobody see his face?! Somebody move that shadow!

This issue opens with a hilarious reason why Spider-Man’s identity remains secret, although I’m a bit confused as to why people in the room itself don’t notice who he is either. That’s a minor plot hole in Dan Slott’s concluding issue of sorts in this Black Cat and Electro team up. There’s also the plot hole of Peter and Silk fleeing while Black Cat and Electro remaining inside the Fact News studio, but I guess they just got bored and left? Not sure why they didn’t just threaten some people to get Spider-Man to come back, but I suppose the plot didn’t require it! There’s another plot hole as to how or why Sajani Jaffrey escapes, but I guess that doesn’t matter either.

The remaining issue unfolds predictably, with Anna Maria continuing to be a strong side character even though Peter can’t stop smooching Silk, the big anti-electrifying machine is used and Black Cat predictably moves forward with her new lease on life. Fans online appear to agree, why is Black Cat so angry and evil all of a sudden? Peter even calls her out on it but don’t expect any answers.

What…the hell…is that belt…?

The issue rounds out well though, as Spider-Man gets one of those heroic moments where he sacrifices himself for the greater good. It’s not going to blow anyone away like the time he held up that ceiling, but it’s nice to see some heroics in this usually quirky book. It’s also nice to see how Silk will be woven into the cast of characters and her new position makes a lot of sense. A big reveal is also in the works as far as someone who work-sat Parker Industries, but it falls a bit flat dramatically. Like it was added because Dan Slott had no where else to put it.

The art by Humberto Ramos continues to shine, but if you hate blue please stay away, because there’s a lot of electro in this book. The panel below for instance, blew me away with how the blade comes right out at us. Nice touch there. Overall there isn’t a lot of Spidey in the issue though and in most cases he’s either wrapped in webs or incapacitated.

Is It Good?

For the first story arc since his return, the story ends in a very blah sort of way. The bad guys are stopped as always and while it’s a great heroic moment for Spidey it’s still rather tepid. There’s still no rhyme or reason as to why Black Cat is so bad, but the new Silk character works great and it’ll be fun to see how she’s used in the future.
