If you loved the first issue of Chicken Devil, you’ll be delighted to know that issue #2 brings even more comedy, mayhem, and chicken shenanigans. The close of issue #1 saw Mitchell Moss barely escape with his life thanks to his heroin-stealing business partner, Antonio. The second entry sees Mitchell try to dispose of a dead body, ditch the cops and keep him and Antonio alive long enough to pay two million dollars to a Russian mob — if Mitchell and Antonio don’t kill each other first.
Chicken Devil #2 is such a clever read that you’ll think someone’s playing a trick on you. The story’s main protagonist, Mitchell Moss, is a character that you’ll have so many different types of feelings for. The guy wanted to run his chicken restaurants and maintain his everyday life with his family. But that’s all gone now. So now we, the readers, try to see Mitchell make sense in a world where one person has destroyed all that for him and how he can bounce back from this dilemma, if at all.
The pacing is fantastic. Each sequence of panels leads to another series of events that Mitchell has to get himself out of. The way writer Brian Buccellato stacks the deck against Mitchell in the book drives the entertainment factor of the book through the roof. It makes you question everything. How’s it going to get out of this? Is his family really dead? Is he going to die? It’s brilliant.
Hayden Sherman’s unique perspective setting up the panel imagery adds to the wacky, imaginative nature of Chicken Devil #2. At times, the illustrations look like the walls are closing in on Mitchell, and other times the artwork adds a much-needed pop to emphasize the intensity of a particular moment. Sherman’s facial expressions amongst the characters help bring out the genuine emotions of each scene. Aside from that, the dialogue is easy to read, and the transitions are pretty smooth.
Overall, you’ll love Chicken Devil #2 even more than the first book. It’s got the drive, action, and suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Great job all around to the team behind such an incredibly engaging story.
