Marvel’s celebration of its 1976-era icons continues this September with an unlikely matchup that pits one of the publisher’s deadliest assassins against three cosmic heroes.
Marvel Gold ’76 #1 arrives from writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Madibek Musabekov, bringing together Bullseye, Nova, Star-Lord, and Jack of Hearts in a one-shot adventure inspired by the characters’ shared anniversary year.
The setup is simple and dangerous. Bullseye has accepted a contract from a mysterious figure with a well-known connection to Death. His mission involves a target of enormous importance, and the assignment quickly attracts the attention of Nova, Star-Lord, and Jack of Hearts. Before long, the streets of New York become the battleground for a conflict that stretches far beyond Earth.
The issue serves as a spotlight for four Marvel characters who either debuted in or rose to prominence around 1976. While Nova and Star-Lord have frequently crossed paths through their cosmic adventures, Bullseye and Jack of Hearts rarely occupy the same corner of the Marvel Universe. That unusual combination is exactly what caught editor Mark Paniccia’s attention.
“You might find this one of the strangest assemblies in comics but pitting Bullseye against three characters who could punt him into the sun is one of the coolest hooks ever,” said Paniccia. “MARVEL GOLD is about assembling the best talent to celebrate these characters with big swings, great stories, and a fresh spotlight that reminds readers why they’ve endured for decades.”
Bullseye’s reputation as Marvel’s most accurate killer will be put to the test against opponents who operate on an entirely different power scale. According to Marvel, the story promises a high-stakes chase through New York and a fight where every decision could have catastrophic consequences.
Writer Stephanie Phillips welcomed the opportunity to celebrate the quartet.
“It was such an exciting opportunity to write a story that celebrates these characters and their legacies, which have helped shape not just comics, but pop culture as a whole,” Phillips said. “I can’t wait for readers to dig into this action-packed story and see the incredible artwork from Madibek Musabekov!”
The official synopsis reads:
JACK OF HEARTS, NOVA, STAR-LORD AND…BULLSEYE!?
THANOS has hired BULLSEYE to pull the trigger… and this time, the shot could end everything! As the DEADLIEST ASSASSIN IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE hunts his target through New York City, STAR-LORD, NOVA and JACK OF HEARTS clash with Bullseye in a brutal, zero-room-for-error fight against the inevitable. Don’t miss one of the most intense superhuman battles in Marvel history.
