Mother/Android takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where androids have risen up against humans. Pregnant Georgia (Chloe Grace Moretz) and her partner Sam (Algee Smith) head to Boston for safety. From there, they plan to sell to China or Korean. But with Georgia ready to give birth at any moment and Sam eager to get them to safety, how far will they get?
The movie sounds like it will be an action packed science-fiction adventure that will include the requisite discussion on humanity’s arrogance. Mother/Android definitely has lots of that. There is a great chase scene in a forest that is reminiscent of Return of the Jedi. There is also some cliché dialogue – especially from a character named Arthur. Mother/Android goes beyond the normal sci-fi trappings, however. The plot immediately hints it will be a more intimate story, and that is certainly the case early on. Time is spent developing the two characters and the constant tension that exists between them. The premise only allows so much, but there is more to the pair than expected.
Things change a little less than an hour in. Mother/Android adds more action and the pace becomes less patient. There are a lot of quick fixes that do not make much sense. It is a surprising tonal change. The first twist of the third act explains a lot of what happened. While it is shocking, something is lacking. It may be how it is revealed or how quickly it is resolved, but it does not pack the gut punch it should.
The big twist in Mother/Android is much more effective. While it does sink into melodrama, it is an emotionally charged moment. It is a culmination of everything that happened before and provides more impact to the ending. An argument can be made that things move a little too quickly in the final moments. That being said, there are some nice callbacks and the further evolution of characters continues. Mother/Android may not be as sci-fi as the title would make a person believe, but it is still entertaining.
