‘The Free Fall’ review: Chaos leads to clever twist

A talkable twist.

The Free Fall is a psychological horror movie that deals in a number of themes. Sara (Andrea Londo) has awoken from a coma after attempting to take her life. As she attempts to piece her life back together, she also has to deal with her overprotective husband (Shawn Ashmore). But is Nick trying to protect her or working to hold her back from discovering the truth?

Director Adam Stilwell creates a sense of tension that lasts the entire time. This is tough for any film to pull off, but it is especially hard for one like The Free Fall. Writer Kent Harper has crafted a story that is constantly dropping clues and red herrings. This means that those watching may either be completely caught up in the mystery or entirely frustrated by the lack of direction.

The Free Fall often asks the audience to fill in the blanks – most noticeably during the final twist. There is nothing wrong with this – part of the fun in watching movies is entering into a fantasy world and being a part of it. The risk is leaving too many questions that cannot be answered. The ending will definitely be the most polarizing thing about the movie. For some, it will be something of a cop out while others will find it clever. The writing and the direction do a good job of leading up to the finale. While there will be differing opinions, there is no doubting that The Free Fall makes good use of setting and foreshadowing.

'The Free Fall' review: Chaos leads to clever twist

There are many films that are defined by their final moments. For better and worse, The Free Fall may end up being one such movie. The writing does a good job of dropping hints but the story can become too chaotic. It is a smart twist, but ultimately lacks the impact it should have.

The Free Fall comes to theaters and VOD January 14
