[Sundance ’22] ‘Huella’ review: Dancing with death

Creative in its simplicity.

Huella is a horror short film screening at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The story follows a woman named Daniela Garcia (Shakira Barrera) who learns that her grandmother has passed away. As she toils away at her desk job, she also discovers that she is now cursed. Dani must now face her fears while coming to terms with her past. But is it already too late for her?

Horror movies have a tendency to be straight and to the point. It is part of their charm and it is also why so many have been quick to dismiss them. Of course, this is more due to the format than the genre, but this is especially true in short films. Huella has a simple plot – a woman coping with death – and a small cast – it is almost a on person show – but there is more nuance here than similar stories.

Dani may be dealing with the death of her grandmother, but this is more than a scary story with strange sounds and ghostly figures. Broken into chapters, Huella sees Dani go through the different stages of grief. It is creative in its simplicity and has a satisfying ending. Through it all, the short is also able to weave in some effective scares. Filled with terror and emotion, the story will keep audiences interested.

The Sundance Film Festival is online January 20- January 30. Tickets can be purchased and a full lineup can be found here.
