On Friday, Mia Galuppo of The Hollywood Reporter revealed that a new live action Masters of the Universe film will be coming to Netflix starring Kyle Allen Set in the lead role. According to Galuppo’s report, the movie is set to begin filming this summer. It will be co-directed by brothers Adam and Aaron Nee and based on a screenplay written by David Callaham (who also wrote Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
The movie will also be a Mattel Films project. This means that it will have full access to the lore/mythology based on the Masters of the Universe toy line, but not the original Filmation animated series. I know that might seem like a minor issue, but it’s worth mentioning for anyone who might get their jimmies rustled about the story not following the exact same canon as the cartoon from their childhood.
That being said, one thing even the most dedicated Masters of the Universe fans tend to agree on is how subpar the 1987 live action film was. Hopefully this version gets it right. I know next to nothing about Kyle Allen, but you have to assume he’ll do a better job portraying He-Man than Dolph Lundgren did.

As for the story, we obviously won’t know anything about that until later this spring. Let’s hope this project is willing to take some narrative risks like the Masters of the Universe: Revelations did (which was great no matter what the haters say), but that it also remembers the crazy ideas and mythology that made us love the franchise in first place.
