EXCLUSIVE: Jarrett J. Krosoczka’s ‘Lunch Lady’ kicks into book stores

Hector, Terrence, and Dee have always wondered about their school lunch lady. What does she do when she isn’t dishing out the daily special?

Out this week is possibly the cutest return to grade school anyone of us could experience and it goes by the name Lunch Lady. Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers is reissuing the first four books in the popular graphic novel series Lunch Lady by Jarrett J. Krosoczka and AIPT has an exclusive first look! It’s currently available wherever books are sold.

The First Helping (Lunch Lady 1 and 2) includes full-color editions of “The Cyborg Substitute” and “The League of Librarians,” and The Second Helping (Lunch Lady 3 and 4) includes “The Author Visit Vendetta” and “The Summer Camp Showdown.” At the forefront of the graphic novel format, Krosoczka’s playful series about a lunch lady serving justice (and lunch) was a hit with readers when it debuted in 2009 and returns with brand-new hardcover books in the series beginning in 2023.

But wait, what is Lunch Lady about?

Hector, Terrence, and Dee have always wondered about their school lunch lady. What does she do when she isn’t dishing out the daily special? Where does she live? Does she have a lot of cats at home? Lunch Lady doesn’t just serve sloppy joes—she serves justice! Whatever danger lies ahead, it’s no match for Lunch Lady in these four fantastic adventures.

Along with the excerpts below, Krosoczka gave AIPT a few details on specific elements in the series. The first up, gadgets!

“One of my favorite things about book touring over the years is seeing all of the creative ideas that kids come up with for potential Lunch Lady gadgets. One school even centered an entire STEM project where kids raided their kitchens to see what tools could double as spy gear!”

And then, on Betty!

“If James Bond has Q and Batman has Alfred, Lunch Lady has Betty. Running a school cafeteria is no easy task and adding the responsibilities of crime-fighting on top of that? Sheesh! That’s a lot. Betty is a gruff, take-no-lip sidekick with a heart of gold. At the end of every book, Betty proves crucial to taking down the Big Bad with her lunch-inspired spy gadgets. With a hand on her hip, she proclaims, ‘JUSTICE IS SERVED!'”
