Is It Good? Godzilla: Cataclysm #4 Review

The Godzilla series we want…nay, that we DESERVE…heads into its penultimate issue. Is it good?

Godzilla: Cataclysm #4 (IDW Publishing)

The story opens with a gorgeously rendered flashback of Hiroshi back when the world loses control of the monsters and kaiju dung starts hitting the fan. During his attempted escape from the devastation, it’s also implied that he developed the ability to control them without the assistance 1990’s VR headgear.

“I totally used this on the bouncer at a club once…”

Back in the present, those skills could certainly come in handy since Mothra appears to be struggling in her attempt to keep Godzilla at bay. The mini-Biollante is also growing in size, making the need for Hiroshi and the boys to hide increasingly urgent.

But just to make sure that the situation is as stressful as possible, Hiroshi admits to his companions about his part in bringing about the earth-ending cataclysm (once again detailed in a beautifully rendered flashback by Dave Wachter). We also learn that one of his personal demons/mind control buddies was Destroyah…who has shown up just in time to kick names and take ass.

Is It Good?

This book is so good that I don’t want it to end.

In four issues, a mythology has been developed that even someone completely unfamiliar with the Toho monsters could enjoy. But at the same time, the story also draws on a large part of the original mythos, giving more well-versed readers a steady stream of easter eggs, cool appearances, and exciting reinterpretations.

And even in the midst of all this incredible kaiju action, the plight of the human characters is exquisitely gripping, leading us through a narrative that occasionally makes it difficult to stop turning pages and marvel at the wondering artwork gracing every panel.

With an insanely good cliffhanger, a clear plot still hasn’t completely tipped its hand, and the promise of its best kaiju smack down yet, there’s a very good chance that the only bad thing about the upcoming final issue of Cataclsym will be that the series is over.
