Midnight is a new Korean thriller from DREAD starring Squid Game’s Wi Ha-jun . Directed by Kwon Oh-Seung, Midnight is an intense fast paced story of a deaf woman trying to survive the night while a serial killer hunts her through the streets of South Korea. While the plot’s driving story is survival, brilliant acting and themes of family take this thriller to the next level.
Wi Ha-jun plays Do Shik, a diabolical serial killer who roams the streets in a van that is basically a serial killer’s office. Equipped with weapons and disguises, Do Shik can be anyone anywhere and do anything without detection. His murder plot goes awry when he is witnessed by a hearing impaired mother(Ha-Yeon Kil) and daughter (Ki-joo Jin). This starts a heart stopping chase by a seemingly soundless predator who delights in manipulating and torturing his victims.
Wi Ha-jun gives an unforgettable performance. His portrayal of Do Shik is over the top and heightens the madness of the villain. Wi Ha-jun’s performance is unsettling and terrifying. Ki-joon Jin is amazing as Kyung Mi, a brave young woman who is discounted in the workplace for her disability. Ki-joon’s portrayal depicts the frustration of someone trying to be heard in a world that already struggles with paying attention to victims. Kyng Mi’s daily motivation is her mother. Kyung Mi asserts herself as confident and not someone to be walked over early on in the film.
Kwon Oh-Seung’s writing is clever and makes inventive use of auditory assistance devices when creating tension and suspense for characters who may not be startled by the typical strange sound in the darkness. Use of lights and excellent camera work heighten the suspense and horror aspects of Midnight to make a disturbing film that will stay with audiences long after the credits roll. Midnight is Oh-Seung’s feature film debut. The directing is stunning and the fight scenes are excellently choreographed.
Midnight will be available On Demand April 4th and on Blu-Ray May 10th.
