‘Wyrmwood: Apocalypse’ review: Sometimes a zombie movie just needs to be a zombie movie

Keeping things simple.

Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is an Australian zombie movie that does things a little different. Rhys (Luke McKenzie) captures civilians and returns them to the military. He hopes to help discover the cure. He soon learns their motives are much more selfish – and sadistic.

Things get off to a quick start. There are some neat gore effects followed by an overly complicated title screen that promises carnage. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse constantly delivers by concentrating on blood and guts while keeping the plot simple.

Allegiances shift throughout Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, but the story is straight and to the point. This is a zombie flick through and through. This means fans of the genre will get a kick out of it, but what about those who have grown tired of these types of movies?

There is a constant sense of chaos throughout the film. It never lets up, even if that means the characters end up being caricatures. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse also has a tone reminiscent of a Video Nasty. It feels like the type of movie that would be secretly shared and traded among horror fans while countries around the world banned it.

Wyrmwood: Apocalypse has the most diverse use of zombies seen in some time. They are used as distractions, pieces of equipment, and, of course, test subjects. There is more zombie torture here than has ever been seen. Inevitably, this leads to some disgustingly fun moments.

Zombie movies remain one of the most popular sub-genres of horror. While there are many that have explored deeper themes, the best tend to be the ones that keep things simple. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse does just that.

Wrymwood: Apocalypse comes to VOD April 14
