Yesterday was a surprise for the comics world as Oni Press editors revealed over Twitter they were let go from the company. That includes Senior Editor Amanda Meadows and editor Jasmine Amiri. No reason was given at the time. VP of sales and marketing Alex Segura and sales manager Henry Barajas were also laid off.
Oni Press is known of late for their licensed comics such as Rick and Morty and some incredible comics by queer creators, such as the incredible Cheat(er) Code from 2020. Oni Press merged with Lion Forge back in 2019.
As a result of the news, Oni Press tweeted the following statement to try to clear the air:

In the statement, Oni Press/Lion Forge states the recent layoffs were made for “the sole purpose of evolving the company and brand, and positioning it for long-term success.”
The rumors Oni Press’s statement refers to may involve the company being bought or sold, but that’s speculation this time. Given the uproar from comics creators on Twitter and the 25 years of Oni’s history, the reaction has been a bit of shock and disappointment.
Stay tuned to AIPT as we’ll let you know as soon as we do why there were layoffs, or at the very least what Oni Press’ next moves will be.
