X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1
Marvel somehow pulled off an even better X-Men: Hellfire Gala this year because it is delivered in an impactful extra-sized one-shot. You get the intrigue, melodrama, and beginning of a new year of X-Men with fashion and celeb cameos too.

Daredevil #1
Daredevil #1 hits heavy as you’re seeing Matt Murdock go through some familiar pain. Chip and Marco are continuing their trailblazing run on Daredevil, but steel yourself as I think this will live up to the phrase, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” Buckle up and keep your head on a swivel, as it will be a hell of a ride.

Justice Warriors #2
Just like last time, this is the sort of book you should go out and buy to remind yourself why you like comics. A book that utilizes the medium in a way only comics can. The perfect book for lapsed comic fans.

Immortal X-Men #4
Gillen’s writing once again feels very respectful to the characters’ histories and he manages to capture such a wonderfully complex character like Emma Frost so well in this issue. Michele Bandini’s pencils really work in this issue, capturing Emma’s grace, elegance, and subtle vulnerabilities really well. Those panels of Emma in her room trying to sleep really capture the feeling of Emma’s loneliness in those moments. Oh, and that cover? Mark Brooks is a hero for that one –what a perfect Emma cover.

Fantastic Four #45
Fantastic Four #45 is a good send-off for major plot elements Dan Slott introduced. One might argue he’s putting to bed some of his ideas and resetting the book for another creative team, but it’s done with such nuance and professionalism it feels like we’re reading a classic Marvel tale. Fantastic Four reminds us Marvel’s cosmic universe is challenging and epic.
