Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 3, 2022

In a loaded week of comic books, which five were the very best comics of the week?

Welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five! This week, DC crushed it with three spots, while Image Comics and IDW Publishing rounded out the top five. Let’s get right to the books!

Godzilla Rivals II: Vs. Battra

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 3, 2022

Godzilla Rivals II: Vs. Battra is an exciting entry that gives some love to an underutilized Godzilla foe. Rosie Knight and Oliver Ono make the story better not just through some cool monster action, but by making the cast of characters worth going on the journey with. With atmosphere and good characters, Godzilla Rivals II: Vs. Battra delivers on what readers want from the kaiju genre.

Aquaman: Andromeda #2

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 3, 2022

Readers of a certain age will liken some of what you see here to The Abyss with an unnerving horror underbelly. If that sounds appealing to you, you’ll love Aquaman: Andromeda for how it makes you feel dread and uncertainty. In the same way Michael Crichton made us fear corporate overreach in Jurassic Park and the unknown in Sphere, so too does Ram V and Christian Ward spark the imagination.

Twig #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 3, 2022

Twig #4 is a great chapter in the fantasy adventure as it captures the heart of the characters with deeply emotional moments. It’s also a series that continues to wow with its visuals and imaginative fantasy worlds.

Poison Ivy #3

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 3, 2022

Poison Ivy has excelled at giving its lead a compelling tale, even if the tale is a bit depressing. Ivy is clearly in desperate need of help and compassion as she moves from town to town, so it will be interesting if she is able to find that help inside herself or inside the people who know her best. G. Willow Wilson, Marcio Takara, Arif Prianto, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou have made this story one of the character’s best.

Flashpoint Beyond #4

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 3, 2022

The big reveal is here and very satisfying as it ties so much of the mystery and adventure together. I’m surprised the creative team chose that character, but it will make for fantastic conflict later in the series. It looks like Thomas and Bruce Wayne are in for some heavy fallout.
