Only Murders in the Building concludes another high-profile mystery this week in the season finale. Charles, Oliver, and Mabel make a play to reveal the criminal mastermind and trick them into confessing. It’s an orchestrated effort that requires the help of many at the Arconia.
The inclusion of the help and residents of the building enhances the feeling of community and closeness. The various people all join together to find justice in the death of one of their own. There are even opportunities for development as we learn more about Lester and his tragic backstory and how he became the doorman. In addition, his hidden talent adds gravitas to the situation. More importantly, they all contribute to the chaos of the spectacle ahead especially Howard and his fainting.
The interrogation in the episode of Only Murders in the Building is delightful and hilarious. Cinda Canning has some peculiar phobias and the gang take full advantage. The absurdity of the scene is something only Martin Short and Steve Martin can pull off, along with contributions from the background characters. For her part, Tina Fey sells Canning’s reaction and you get caught up regardless of how ridiculous everything is.
With regards to the mystery, there is room for one final twist. We see through flashback how the killer’s plan all came together tying up the loose ends. It’s also nice and fitting that Bunny’s final words are the clue that aids in catching her assailant.
The comedy is top notch for the finale. In addition to the questioning scene, many of the zingers and jokes are sharp. Whether they are commenting on Cinda’s hiring choices or Howard’s theater experience, they all earn a good laugh. The attention to detail is a nice touch as well with nods to Gut Milk Light and a special audio performance from a particular yodeling acapella group in the end.
What’s most exciting moving forward in Only Murders in the Building is the set up for season three. There is a time jump with our three leads in better places after clearing their names. Charles and Oliver find a way to collaborate outside of the podcast. The stakes are higher considering how they are all thriving and it seems we’ll have a change of scenery outside the Arconia. The real kicker is the victim, whom it can be safe to say, that most of America loves. I can’t wait to see how this crime unravels but there comes a point where the trio should catch on that death follows them.
“I Know Who Did It” is a terrific conclusion to a solid season with humorous and sharp comedy and a hell of a set up for the next mystery.
