The buddy movie and martial arts combine in March’s Rise of the Kung Fu Dragon Master, a new softcover OGN. AIPT can exclusively reveal preview pages from the story about Rick, a small-time crook in Los Angeles, who accidentally acquires the power of the dragon.
Written by Chris Mancini and art by Fernando Pinto, the 188-page graphic novel is available to preorder with a release date of March 15.
Of the pages below, Mancini says, “The pages show the danger to the outside world if this conflict spills over, so it opens up the story a bit.”
“The fight club pages, even those static panels, are filled with energy as Lin discovers what Rick and Sam are up to. Fernando’s layout and flow makes sure that even if there’s a panel with no action, it’s still dynamic and almost a promise of the action that’s about to unfold shortly.”
“There’s always a great “oh, no!” moment when the hero is confronted with a rather large monster, and on top of that Rick seems quite out of his league. That’s right where the fun begins. Just… not for Rick.”
Pinto added, “My favorite scene to draw in the book was the coffee house scene. Just the sheer ridiculousness of the whole thing allowed for some cool visuals and gags about the cliches of “Coffee house culture” which was a blast. Also I really dug how the lighting in that scene came together. Who doesn’t love dusk, am I right?”
“As for the riot/ fight club pages, those were pretty challenging as they were the first few of the second volume I drew, so I had to get back up to speed with the book, and the look I established for part one. The fact that they were action oriented was a definite plus, and the fight club montage (With the little nods I got to put in) were really fun.”
“As for the rest of the pages? There’s giant creatures I got to design and draw in an action setting. If you draw comics, and you don’t LOVE doing those kinds of pages, I can’t help you.”
