‘What’s Love Got to Do With It?’ review: Love Contractually

Traditional rom-com

What’s Love Got to Do with It? never steers far from its rom-com trappings. Zoe (Lily James, Rebecca) is a documentarian trying to come up with an idea for her next project. Her childhood friend Kaz (Shazad Latif, Star Trek: Discovery) becomes the reluctant subject of her next film when Zoe decides to film his journey from London to Lahore as he meets the bride that was arranged for him. Along the way, she learns there are more ways to find love than she thought.

The film may not be afraid of being overly familiar, but it never feels stale. This is seen most glaringly as Zoe pitches her idea to a pair of producers. It is a great exchange filled with the type of wit rarely seen in the genre. What’s Love Got to Do with It? also weaves in some interesting subplots. Sometimes there is too much going on – a pair of lifelong friends who may be falling in love is the real story here, after all. That being said, as much as is packed in, it never feels overwhelming, and the side stories are a big part of the charm.

This is in large part due to the fantastic performances. Emma Thompson is unsurprisingly great, but it is James and Latif that really stand out. It is surprising how many romantic comedies forget the importance of having two leads with outstanding chemistry. Zoe and Kaz are a great pair, and though they could have been better developed, the two are not one of those couples people hate spending time with.

What’s Love Got to Do with It? is a paint by the numbers rom-com that does not take too many risks. There is some great writing and the cast make sure that even the most formulaic moments remain interesting. Even an ending that wraps things up a little too sweetly cannot ruin a feel good viewing experience.

What’s Love Got to Do with It? comes to theaters and On Demand May 5
