‘Johnny & Clyde’ review: Falling over the edge

Tries too hard, but feels like it didn’t try at all.

A movie does not leave much to the imagination when it is named Johnny & Clyde. The titular pair are serial killers who are madly in love with each other. Their latest endeavor involves robbing a casino owned by crime boss Alana Hart (Megan Fox, Transformers). Sounds easy enough. Until they find out who – or what – is guarding the cash.

Plenty of movies suffer from trying to do too much, but this still manages to stand out for the amount of stuff that is in it. Along with the heist and crime story aspects, there are elements of a revenge tale, plus a number of over the top characters. And then the demon shows up.

More often than not, it feels like writers Nick Principe (who plays two roles in Johnny & Clyde) and Tom DeNucci (who also directed) kept in every idea they thought of. This means there is always an edgy comment or a crazy moment, but there is little depth to the characters or plot. It is supposed to be wild fun, but it ends up being annoying.

Before long, it becomes a test of patience. How long can you put up with the obnoxious characters? How much do you like Megan Fox?  Why are there so many characters? Is the demon ever going to arrive? A premise this silly should be enjoyable. Horror has been added to heist movies before, but Johnny & Clyde does so in a way that is completely ridiculous. It was obviously never meant to be taken seriously, but it could have been entertaining.

Johnny & Clyde comes to theaters and On Demand May 5
