Brynmore #2 picks up where the previous issue left off, with Mark Turner finding a stone coffin in his basement with weird symbols written on it. Mark begins doing research and finds no record of the tomb. So he decides to do what any rational person would do, he opens it. What’s the worst that could happen? Mark is about to find out.
After reading Brynmore #2, I still have no idea what the hell is going on and I’m loving every minute of it. Specifically the clever way that Steve Niles gives you new elements of the story while still finding ways to shroud them in mystery. For instance, Mark Turner opens the stone but you still have no clue as to what has been unleashed and whether it’s friend or foe. The only thing you do know moving forward is that you hope Mark can survive whatever hellacious curse he’s awakened so that he can try to rebuild the broken relationship with his daughter.
As for the art, Damien Worm and Alyzia Zherno have truly outdone themselves with the illustrations throughout this book. The detailed coffin panels, the insanely perfect transitions and the sheer emotion that pours off each page are just a fraction of the awesome elements of storytelling that await you in this book. My favorite part of the artwork is the panels that involve Mark and his daughter Sophie. It gives the story a glimmer of hope within the darkness that is about to be unleashed.
With three issues left in this five-part miniseries, you can tell that all hell is about to break loose. Niles and Worm have built up a great deal of tension that’s about to pay off. With great pacing, heart, good characters, and a spooky mystery, Brynmore is shaping up to be a great series.
