IDW’s new horror series Brynmore by Steve Niles and Damien Worm shows promise with its first issue’s slow but solid start. The plot centers on Mark Turner, a recovering addict who has recently divorced. After failing as a husband and a father, Mark decides to move back to his hometown, a small island off the coast of North Carolina called Turner Island. Mark’s family name was significant on the island dating back to the 1700s. However, those days have long passed, and the locals of the town are not welcoming towards a Turner setting foot on the island upon Mark’s arrival.
Brynmore #1’s writing offers a relatable and genuine portrayal of divorce, addiction, and the ease at which one’s life can unravel. Although the book may not contain many creepy, unexpected horror elements, Niles compensates with even more terrifying mental scenarios, such as a father’s attempt to connect with a daughter who refuses to talk with him. The illustrations by Damien Worm perfectly match the tone and character designs of the story. Upon Mark’s arrival on the island, it feels like a place that has been through a lot of historical drama over the years. Mark’s appearance, with his chiselled look, long beard, and hair, accurately portrays a man who has gone through many traumatic experiences in the past.
Brynmore #1 may not seem spooky at first, but the final pages offer an unexpected twist that will leave you eager for the second issue. Overall, the comic is intriguing and worth sticking with to see where the story goes next. It’s definitely worth picking up.
