Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott come together very nicely in Titans #4 to craft an issue that hints at the problems plaguing the Titans. This opening arc has well-shared portions with each issue, making it enjoyable as the story progresses. Taylor gives each character great moments to shine and bond with their teammates. While Scott is excellent at giving us some graphic images, and the ones you’ll see inside will spook you a little next time someone yawns in your general direction.
The opener is a fun scene with Raven and Beast Boy. It’s fun to see Raven as a character trying to build others up, a way she usually isn’t portrayed. So, this is excellent character growth, especially with Beast Boy being a little edgy after the events of Dark Crisis. It was enjoyable to see their two power sets come together as they worked with each other to shut down the bullies – a nice tie-in to the stories that Tom Taylor established over in Nightwing. It helps to make the two books feel connected in a shared city.
The next part goes to the eerie meteorite discovered in previous issues. I like how Nightwing has an idea about the meteorite, but the dialogue with Starfire only mentions it. It’s a fun tease that hopefully will be played on and can come from Tom Taylor’s past interactions with Nightwing. The next portion is an excellent showcase of how well the creative team juggles multiple characters as Beast Boy wants to start a helping initiative, and Flash offers to help, drawing back to his problem in this arc. Storytelling like that helps to showcase how the Titans are different than the Justice League and progresses the plot while tying back to the earlier story.
As for the clues mentioned earlier, there is a moment for Nicola Scott to shine as she presents the infiltration that will most likely get to Flash. Scott knocks it out of the park as it is such a gross scene, but it helps to play up the eeriness that ties in with the Church of Blood. The scene plays nicely since the front image is so gross that you might turn away, but when curiosity takes hold and you look at the characters behind the spread, you can see perfect representations of hate and fear. Scott has been doing an excellent job with her characters in this book; the faces are ideal tools to help emote the script from her partner.
Titans #4 is a fun issue with wonderful character moments that progress and tie together the problems plaguing the Titans. An appearance by Waller hints at what will come with Tom Taylor’s future crossover and Nicola Scott shows you a new disgusting way to recruit people.
