‘Amazons Attack’ #1 offers a tense action scene

Nubia seeks peace, but will the enemy let her?

The Amazons are quite literally undertaken due to the events of Wonder Woman, and Josie Campbell and Vasco Georgiev are bringing Amazons Attack to comic shops to show how they respond. Spinning out of Wonder Woman #2 which featured a backup leading into this story, Nubia is our main character, but there are plenty of key Amazons that enter the fray in this tense action thriller.

This issue opens with various vessels floating outside of Thymiscara seemingly hoping to break its invisible border. The Amazons have people on their shores wanting answers, but meanwhile, Nubia and the Amazons also seek similar answers. No one knows why an Amazon killed 19 men in a bar, but Wonder Woman is on it. The answer to that question isn’t the main focus of this series, however, as prophecies dictated in Wonder Woman #2 backup needs to be stopped.

The first half of this issue does well to recap how the Amazons got here while shoring up any loose ends before Nubia heads to America. Campbell reminds us of where Nubia’s wife Io stands, which helps add some context to the heat of the moment. It’s a bit slow to get to the meat of the action, though, but we’ll see how much of the info in the first half pays off later.

Soon Nubia is off to meet with the president and calm tensions, but once she arrives she finds everyone knows she is coming and an attack is imminent. The second half of the issue pops off with lots of twists and turns in the action with good intense moments rendered by Georgiev. These scenes don’t let up, with real danger around every corner. When things shift to the outdoors…let’s just say you’ll wonder if our heroes will make it out alive.

It’s a little odd Nubia entered a situation without any guards, but she is a superhero. Other Amazons pop in at opportune times, but it’s natural as threats to Nubia’s life increase. In fact, this issue does the rare thing in making danger seem very high, which you don’t often see in a superhero comic.

Of course, heroes save the day, and a surprise superhero pops into the narrative in an exciting way. This character also adds some nice comedy which balances well with the danger and high stakes of the moment. By the end of the issue, Campbell and Georgiev put our heroes in a tight position where their advantage is gone, but their hope to enact change never wavers.

Amazons Attack sets up a pulse-pounding race to get answers while dodging bullets. You haven’t seen Amazons in a situation like this – disadvantaged, but resolute in finding solutions.
