Our Channel Surfing TV picks will take you to exciting places both real and fantasy. Classic fairy tales receive a dark twist in The Grimm Variations. A popular former late night television host travels the world in Conan O’Brien Must Go. Finally, The Spiderwick Chronicles jump from the page to your screen with a new adaptation.

Not Your Mother’s Fairy Tales

We all grew up hearing and reading Grimms’ Fairy Tales including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel. Some of the stories from brothers Jacob and Wilhelm are receiving a darker, anime take.

The Grimm Variations finds the brothers regaling their younger sister, Charlotte, with their work. However, Charlotte begins to question if the characters really do live “Happily ever after.” The anthology series reinterprets these classics from the perspective of the younger Grimm who sees things differently from her older siblings.

Stream the first season of The Grimm Variations beginning Wednesday, April 17, on Netflix.

Conan Visits His Fans

Conan O’Brien has kept busy since his talkshow went off the air going into podcasting with Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. A sub-series of his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan, featured him meeting his fans by video call. Now he is hitting the road to see some of those fans in person in his latest project.

Conan O’Brien Must Go is a four-episode travel series where the host visits the home countries of some of the friends he met through his podcast. He hits up Norway, Thailand, Argentina, and Ireland where he experiences their culture, food, and sites. Think of it as a successor to Conan Without Borders

The entire first season of Conan O’Brien Must Go launches Thursday, April 18, on Max.

The Fantastical World Around You

The Spiderwick Chronicles are a beloved series of fantasy children’s books from Tony DeTerlizzi and Holly Black. It will be receiving another adaptation, but this time for television.

The story follows the Grace Family who relocate from New York to their ancestral home in Michigan. Soon after, young Jared unlocks the mystery of their house and learns that magical creatures are real. He is tasked by his great aunt to find his great grandfather’s field guide on these magical creatures before an evil ogre named Mulgarath can.

The Spiderwick Chronicles premiere Friday, April 19, on the Roku Channel.
