#5: X-Men #3

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 28, 2024

X-Men #3 is a great story that picks up some of the momentum lost in the prior issue while further accelerating the plot. This issue does a splendid job depicting how Mackay interprets Scott’s leadership qualities and what the upcoming conflict this team may face will look like. Furthermore, this is overall a strong step in the right direction for this new era of X-Men comics.

Phases of the Moon Knight #1 isn’t just required reading for Moon Knight fans, it’s also a great introduction to the concept of Moon Knight. Plus it’s a book that’s ripe with opportunity. Is there a Moon Knight Samurai? A Viking Moon Knight? Future issues will unveil the Fists of Khonshu’s history, but this installment showcases the promise awaiting creators.

#3: Aliens vs. Avengers #1

Fantastic Five: The best comics of the week of August 28, 2024

Aliens vs. Avengers #1 is awesome. It captures everything frightening from the Alien franchise while establishing a unique story using older Avengers and a cliffhanger that’s most dire. Aliens vs. Avengers is a tense, unforgettably framed epic.

The more this story develops — and lets the characters move around this world — the better it’ll be and the more layers there will be to explore down the road. In the case of Nights #11 and #12, we may get even more special episodes, but one thing is already clear: we’re about to go through it more than that Fresh Prince episode “Just Say Yo.”

Zatanna: Bring Down the House #3 is another slam dunk of an issue. If you’re not reading this story or have been on the fence about it, let this issue be the one to sell you on it! Tamaki and Rodríguez are creating something appealing truly special in this reimagination of Zatanna’s origin, and it’s a must-read for old and new fans alike.
