‘Into The Unbeing: Part One’ #4 ramps up the weird

‘Into The Unbeing: Part One’ #4 wraps up part one.

The final issue of Into The Unbeing: Part One, issue #4, arrives in comic shops this week, and it’s gone too soon. A series that takes body horror to a new level while also showing us a possible future after our climate collapses. The mysteries of a giant are explored by scientists who can’t escape it, but what will they find?

Picking up where we left off, Into The Unbeing: Part One #4 ramps up the danger and stakes while establishing new levels of weirdness. Two of the remaining three survivors are looking down a dark hole where their fellow scientist Selva fell. Soon, a swarm of what looks like crickets comes flying out of the very same hole where a creature flies around, gobbling them up. Just another day in the rotting corpse of a giant, I guess!

So begins the ongoing survival of scientists who bite off more than they can chew. While one marvels at the ecosystem inside this giant, the other wants to get the hell out. When it comes to Selva, she has way fewer options as what looks like gut acids eat her clothes off and then her feet.

Much like any adventure story, hard choices must be made. Writer Zac Thompson puts these characters to the test when it comes to Selva’s well being, showing survival is everything.

That looks painful.

The wonderful world of a familiar yet unique anatomy continues to be a great deal of fun. Hayden Sherman gets us to the pelvis before the issue closes, and these characters start at the head. Sherman continues to show off incredible layout design skills, using symmetry to create beautiful pages. There’s an almost religious aspect to the layouts at times, as if we’re looking at a stained glass window. He also uses another twisty-turny page to show our characters navigating the putrid insides of the giant.

An opportune flashback for one of our characters helps flesh them out. It also adds a lot to what was going on in the world when climate change meant catastrophe, and the only response was to fight back at energy companies. It’s not too far-fetched to believe.

The final two pages up the ante nicely, making you wish for the sequel series as soon as possible. I won’t spoil it, but the amazing Scavengers Reign comes to mind with a creature reveal. How does this incredible ecosystem keep coming up with such alien creatures? The lead-up to this reveal does make the issue feel a little slow, with too much time spent on Selva’s ailment, but I’ll take what I can get.

If you thought this series was weird, wait until you read Into The Unbeing: Part One #4. The creatures, the artistry, and the utter doom these characters go through only increase. I’d read 100 issues of this series, but alas, it’s the end of part one.
