On the latest Only Murders in the Building, worlds collide as the actors for the upcoming film spend time with their real counterparts. Despite the tagalongs, the investigation must go on as they dig further into the residents from the west side of the Arconia.
There are some pretty interesting dynamics between Charles, Mabel, Oliver, and their on-screen equivalents. The pair that seems the most natural is between Steve Martin and Eugene Levy. Probably because their characters are so similar, they are very much in the same mind set. Their schemes may lack imagination, but it’s wholesome. With veterans such as Martin and Levy, along with Richard Kind playing the unamused Vince Fish, they can make awkward work comedically.
On the other hand, we have contrasts between the Mabel and Eva Longoria duo and the Oliver and Zach Galafianakis grouping. We received a sample of it in the premiere, but there’s a tension in the former. The Only Murders in the Building version of Longoria is a take the bull by the horns kind of gal, but with her audacious and outlandish behavior, it makes the actress feel as though she’s trying too hard.

Conversely, it’s Oliver who tries too hard to gain the approval of Galafianakis. In his desperate attempts to woo the Hollywood A-lister, we receive classic Putnam with all his flamboyant flair and charisma. Learning the secrets to his one-liner stories is insightful and the fact that Galafianakis can nail the delivery represents how far their relationship has evolved. In addition, it’s pure glee watching them bond via montage while the Perfect Strangers theme song plays. Although it’s a rough road, in the end you can feel progress between the characters, which isn’t the case with Mabel and Longoria.
On the Only Murders in the Building mystery front, we continue to explore the Westies particularly Christmas guy, Rudy Thurber. He is another quirky addition to the new Arconia residents we’ve met, and like them, he is friendly but misunderstood. What’s more tantalizing is Mabel’s attempt to pull the mysterious Dudenoff out of hiding. It’s a high stakes play that could reap rewards, but also places her in a risky situation. The final reveal further emphasizes the danger of the investigation while raising more questions.
“Two for the Road” highlights the interactions between the main crew and their Hollywood counterparts with mostly entertaining success.
New episodes of Only Murders in the Building release Tuesdays on Hulu.
