Just in time for the Halloween season, Creepshow, an extension of the Shudder TV show, returns with Creepshow Vol. 3 #1 of its highly addictive Image Comics series. We’re treated to two tantalizing stories: one by writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Kagan Mcleod entitled “Let ‘Er Trip” and the other, “Scrimshaw,” by writer, artist, and letterer James Stokoe.
In this issue, The Creep delivers two nightmarishly fun tales. Chip Zdarsky’s “Let ‘Er Trip” introduces us to Jane Miller, a helicopter parent who struggles to relate to her daughter, Mary. When Mary turns 18 and decides to leave home, Jane isn’t about to let her go without a fight. She tracks Mary down, only to find her taking refuge with a cult. What happens next is a surprise even Jane won’t see coming.

Next up is “Scrimshaw,” a story about a reporter who thinks he’s chasing yet another outlandish fisherman tale. Unfortunately for him, this story involves severed arms, mysterious creatures, and creepy carvings on human bones. Some stories are better left untold, and this reporter learns the hard way that when you go fishing for a story, sometimes you end up getting hooked yourself.

The best part about both stories is how they couldn’t be more different from one another but still fit together seamlessly. While some Creepshow tales can feel a bit short, that’s part of what makes them so addictive to read (and watch). Kagan McLeod and James Stokoe excel with the artwork, using color and detail to perfectly capture the classic “gotcha” moments that make both the Creepshow TV show and comic so irresistible.
Overall, Creepshow Vol. 3 #1 is the perfect treat to kick off the October Halloween season. It’s quick, hits hard, and delivers those twisted endings that make you question everything you just read. Bring on issue #2!
