‘DC All In Special’ #1 review

After Absolute Power, DC goes All In, but what will that mean for Darkseid?

Before you read DC All In Special, I strongly recommend you read Absolute Power #4, which sets the stage for why the DC heroes are implementing these ideas. Our own David Brooke sat down with Scott Snyder and Wes Craig, giving some excellent insights that will add to their works. After reading that interview and the All In Special, I saw that the creative truly went “All In.” Fans have been through several initiatives from DC Comics, so how does this differ from New 52, Rebirth, and Dawn of DC?

The All In Special is very interactive. As you may have heard, it will be split in half and flipped into two parts, appropriately titled “Alpha” and “Omega”. The first and front portion is “Alpha” by Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Daniel Sampere, and Alejandro Sanchez. These four unite nicely; you can feel the hope radiating from this refocused group of heroes. The reintroduction of the Justice League as the Justice League Unlimited is perfect! I felt like I could hear the theme music from the JLU animated series, which gave me chills. I looked intensely at each panel to see which heroes were present; this was a great who’s who of the DCU.

The back portion, “Omega”, is by Snyder and Williamson, with art by Wes Craig and Mike Spicer providing colors. Craig’s approach is indeed a 180 from Sampere’s. This portion of the book is straight out of hell with its visuals and showcases the horrific journey Darkseid is on to capture this new feeling of power lust. I appreciate the locations that Darkseid journeys to and leaves his mark there. From a script perspective, I appreciate the twist on Final Crisis with Darkseid learning to use the tools that have stopped him in the past.

DC Comics

There are so many great moments in this issue, and Booster Gold and Darkseid fans will see a comic that hits the top spot in their collection. The scene at the beginning with Superman and Booster reminded me of their quick meeting in The Death of Superman, where Doomsday was named, but this is so much more hopeful. Barry Allen saying, “I’ve seen one of these before,” got me to go back to Infinite Frontier #6, and I think there are some hints there. This All In Special gives me a perfect view of what happens when an unstoppable force of hope meets an unmovable object of destruction. I believe in the creators when they state they are going “All In,” if this is a preview of what is to come, then I am majorly hyped!

I am ALL IN! Wow, what a crazy, incredible sight to see when an unstoppable force of hope in the Justice League meets an unmovable object of destruction in Darkseid. Snyder, Williamson, Sampere, and Craig are living up to actions that are more vital than words, and I believe in this initiative as it is taking the DC Universe even further. I’m looking forward to the next chapter in this saga!

The stories of the Justice League and Darkseid coming together in that spectacular center spread by Dan Mora and Tamra Bonvillain is brilliant!
The play on Darkseid and Booster Gold with the ring is great and can't wait to see if that is part of the Absolute Universe or something else
Seeing all those heroes together and the full expansion of the League is a wonderful callback
Darkseid's brutal journey was intense and demands to be viewed twice as it was one man against everything
The art styles of Sampere and Craig are perfectly different to showcase hope against hate
