Welcome back to another edition of Fantastic Five, where we shout out the best comics of the week! This week, DC goes All In with the All In Special, Justice Society, and Shazam!. Let’s take a look at the books!
The best comics of the week: October 2, 2024
#5: Storm #1
The best piece of art comes when Ororo is shown in her full costume. Werneck keeps the cloudy atmosphere that’s defined Ororo’s hair, along with the same flowing cape and the regal elements from her Krakoa-age comic. Guimares and Sifuentes-Sijo bathe the background in glowing golden light, creating a beautiful image that is worth the cover price alone. Storm #1 is a big, bold comic that is the kind of story you’d expect from Ororo Munroe, and if the last page is any indication, the best is yet to come.

#4: Shazam! #16
All in all (get it?), Shazam! #16 presents us with an excellent jumping on point for the series as it gets comfortable with all the development there’s been over the past year, using it as a springboard for a brand new direction that feels organic to what has been built up while still taking advantage of the new initiative. Campbell continues to impress and McDaid breathes new life into this modern take on our Captain, promising an uncertain future as the focus shifts to darker looming threats.

#3: Ultraman X Avengers #2
Ultraman X Avengers #2 keeps up the momentum of its debut issue, thanks to strong character work and blockbuster-level artwork. This year has been ripe with crossovers, but this one is definitely at the top of the pack.

#2: Justice Society of America #12
An era of the Justice Society ends very sincerely as the New Golden Age concludes. Geoff Johns and Todd Nauck deliver a beautiful issue that hits all the right nostalgic notes. Get ready to want to do the journey all over again. Stargirl hits another milestone as her extended family roots her on, reminding us that Titans are Together, the Justice Leaguers are Legends, but the JSA is a family legacy.

#1: DC All In Special #1
I am ALL IN! Wow, what a crazy, incredible sight to see when an unstoppable force of hope in the Justice League meets an unmovable object of destruction in Darkseid. Snyder, Williamson, Sampere, and Craig are living up to actions that are more vital than words, and I believe in this initiative as it is taking the DC Universe even further. I’m looking forward to the next chapter in this saga!
